A Green Success Story – Zellers at Tecumseh Mall
It is absolutely amazing what you can recycle if you put your mind to it! In the past 3 years at Zellers we have reduced the amount of garbage we used to send to the landfill by over 90%. We have a very large garbage compactor with a 40 cubic yard bin. Pretty much everything used to get thrown inside the bin which was picked up at least once per month and sent to the landfill. This practice was not only very harmful to our environment but also very costly.
Our first step was to put a padlock on the garbage disposal and then we placed an open garbage bin in front of it so all could see what we were attempting to dispose of. Secondly, we appointed a recycling champion (the only person with a key to the garbage bin). Marcie Quennville sorts through our garbage every day and separates the recycled material from the rest. The result of this simple practice speaks for itself - We have only had 1 garbage pick-up so far this year!! Marcie is a true advocate for recycling. She is constantly educating our 100+ Associates on the importance of recycling and even spends her own time making awareness posters and touring the Windsor Transfer Station on Central Avenue to get more ideas for recycling!
Being a large volume retail operation, we receive a tractor-trailer full of merchandise on almost a daily basis. Our largest amount of recycled material is paper and cardboard. Each week we crush this material and produce 4-5 bales weighing 1,000 lbs each and ship them off to be recycled. In addition, approximately 4 skid loads of plastic wrap and plastic hangers are bagged and shipped out weekly also along with any scrap wooden skids that used to be broken up and put into the garbage. All of this material is now recycled. James McGhie, Store Manager |
